Idle Testing Can Hide a Restriction
A diesel engine may run normally at idle while experiencing fuel starvation under higher load.
One reason is that fuel demand increases with engine output.
A partially restricted filter may therefore appear acceptable during low-flow conditions but produce a meaningful pressure drop when fuel demand rises.
Measure Across the Filter
Instead of checking only one side of the fuel circuit, measure the pressure difference across the filter where the system design allows.
The important question is:
How much pressure is being lost through the restriction?
Reproduce the Complaint
If the complaint occurs during:
- acceleration;
- heavy equipment operation;
- sustained highway load;
- high engine speed,
the diagnostic test should reproduce a comparable fuel-flow demand.

Low supply pressure can affect:
- high-pressure pump filling;
- rail-pressure rise;
- injection stability.
